The Cape Verdean dancehall duo SUPA SQUAD are about to take over the world. Zacky Man and Mr. Marley, both vocalists, songwriters and producers, have created a solid fusion of modern dancehall and new roots reggae, and their energetic performances and dynamic stage presence has won over audiences throughout Portugal. With dub-plate sessions for Sentinel Sound and PowPow Movement under their belts, the duo is ready to take Portuguese Dancehall to a new level.
Isaac “Zacky Man” Rosário and Marley "Mr Marley" Rosário are the driving forces behind Supa Squad. Between them, they have over thirty years’ experience on the Portuguese music scene. As the son of musicians, Zacky learned to play drums at the age of five, learning from some of the best percussionists in their community in Cape Verde. Driven by his natural skill at music and his strong work ethic, Zacky eventually learned to play bass, guitar, and keyboards. His talent and versatility led him to play with various local bands.
Like his cousin, Marley was steeped in music from an early age. His father, Jahlú, formed the reggae band One Love Family when he was five years old, and one year after the band started Marley began playing percussion with them.
The duo’s first single, “Babylon is Falling”, dropped in 2012, attracting tens of thousands of views on YouTube. To follow up their success the pair toured Portugal and wrote several lyrics to riddims of Jamaican producers like Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor, Russian and Don Corleone. The cousins took on the name SUPA SQUAD to reflect their evolution of their sound.
Supa Squad wants to bring dancehall and reggae to the Portuguese and European music scenes. The vocalist/producers describe their music as original dancehall-reggae with a strong Jamaican flavor. Listeners know them for their danceable beats and conscious lyrical content.
The duo spent much of 2013 cutting singles for sound systems across the country, shooting music videos, and playing live concerts. With their strong back catalog and confident stage presence, Supa Squad are now ready to take Portuguese Dancehall to a new international level.
